Prong collars, also known as pinch collars, may look menacing, but they're actually more humane and safer for the dog than the old-style choke chain collars. Prong collars are designed to "pinch" the skin around the dog's neck, in much the same way as a mother dog does when she disciplines her pup by "biting" it on the neck.
Unlike choke-chain collars, prong collars are made so that they are unable to be tightened beyond a certain point, making it impossible to crush your dog's larynx or actually choke him.
Using a prong collar is like power steering for your dog. Our 85-pound Shepherd mix can pull me off my feet if there's something she wants to go after, but when I'm using the prong collar, she's perfectly behaved on the leash.
We use the Herm Sprenger stainless-steel prong collar, but any quality prong collar will do, giving you leash control over your dog like you've never had before!
